I separated the achnanthes species as follows: A. lewisiana by its lanceolate valve with evenly spaced, mildly radiate straie, A. deflexa by its linear valve, broadly rounded ends, and parallel striae, which are somewhat more distantly spaced in the midregion of the valve, and A. minutissima by its narrow valve with rostrate/sub-rostrate ends.
