1 QUALIFIER:
Qualifier Code: TaxaNote Description: Notes taken about the taxa for a count; older data typically includes information such as beginning and end scan coordinates, unusual taxa, etc. Comments: Counting transect along median line of coverslip. Counting discrete, successive, non overlapping fields of view along the transect. Going down (as seen under the microscope).
start x=97.6, y=20.2; end=97,6, y=12.2
Observed species (= seen while qualitatively scanning the slide but not encountered during the 600 valves count):
Cymbella tumida
Navicula parablis
Observations on individual taxa:
- In the counts I kept separated dwarf forms of Achnanthidium exiguum var. constrictum. These differ by small size, subrostrate ends, and extremely weak constriction, and might represent a separate taxon. In this count:
Achnanthidium exiguum var. constrictum = 19 valves
Achnanthidium exiguum var. constrictum DWARF = 3
- There is a preponderance of small specimens of Achnanthidium jackii but even the smallest R valves consistently have a butterfly-shaped central area (acutely-angled fascia). This species is more easily recognizable in other slides of the same series (e.g., NEON00336).
- Gomphosphenia sp. 1 NEON Puerto Rico is a distinct new species that wil be described soon (a draft of the MS is in preparation, plates already exist).
Nomenclatural updates (with respect to the ANSP 2011 list):
Cocconeis placentula var. euglypta, nowadays generally referred to as Cocconeis euglypta Ehrenberg (see Romero & Jahn 2013).
Gomphonema parvulum: This is a species complex.
Denticula kuetzingii. This was shown by Tujii & Williams (2006) to be a Nitzschia: Nitzschia denticula.
Nitzschia sinuata var. delognei is nowadays usually referred to as Nitzschia solgensis.
