These differ by small size, subrostrate ends, and extremely weak constriction, and might represent a separate taxon. In this count: Achnanthidium exiguum var. constrictum = 116 valves Achnanthidium exiguum var. constrictum DWARF = 2 - In the counts I kept separated typical specimens of Nitzschia palea from a short, subcapitate morphotype.
