Station 1 was located approximately 6 1/4 river miles upstream from the highway 301 Bridge at Fayetteville and about 150 yards downstream from Carvers Creek, Cumberland County, North Carolina. Both sides of the river were bordered by steep clay banks which were shaded by trees, mostly sycamore and American ash. An occasional willow hung low over the water and some submerged logs and trees were present plus a small trash pile on each side. The substrate was mostly hard-packed sand, with some accumulations of silt, especially below the submerged log. (1969-1970 report.)
