Station 3 was located approximately one river mile downstream from the lock and dam at Tolar Landing, North Carolina. Both sides had steep, clay banks, heavily shaded with ash, sycamore, and willows. Some submerged logs and stumps and a few trash piles were present. The substrate was hard-packed sand with some patches of silt and debris near the banks.
