Station 4, one of the U.S.G.S. stations for regular water quality monitoring, was located on a headwater branch of Slippery Rock Creek, approximately one miile north of Hilliardsville. This area was located downstream from the mine that was planned to be sealed at the time of the Academy's study. This station extended from the bridge downstream about 55 feet. Riffles and pools were present; however, the bed of the stream was covered with a bright orange-red iron floc. The edge of the station was lined with Acer rubrum and Populus. Berry bushes which seemed to be raspberry or blackberry, were protruding into the water. An occasional elderberry plant was found here and there along the bank.
