| On the Flint River in Dooly and Sumter counties, Georgia, Station 5 was located between the mouth of Turkey Creek and the Georgia Route 27 bridge, covering a distance of approximately 600 m (969 ft). This station was in a straight reach of the river, which was approximately 100 m (328 ft) wide. A large backwater was present along the left bank, just below Turkey Creek and except for this, the shores consisted of a very narrow strip of shallow slope dropping off steeply to the main channel. The current was generally slow at Station 5. Wider beaches were present in small coves in the banks, especially under the Route 27 bridge. The shallow shores contained strips of emergent macrophytes. The substrate of this station was predominantly sand. The right bank was forested; the left bank contained patches of trees surrounding several houses. The river here was unshaded. (1983 report.) |
