| This station was on the North Fork of the Holston, Scott County, approximately a half mile upstream from the intersection of US Route 23 and State Route 614. The river here was about 50 to 60 feet wide and flowed close to the right side of the valley, with a steep bank on the immediate right and a gentle rise to the plain of the valley on the left. The most conspicuous feature of the station was the presence of three diagonal strata of exposed bedrock which formed natural dams in the river. Large boulders were exposed in the stream above and below these outcrops. Between the boulders the bottom was a mixture of sand and silty mud. On the left bank above the riffles the bottom was covered with black muck which yielded many burrowing forms; below the riffles the bottom was gravel with a thin mud layer. The right bank had a protruding rock and boulders with sandy, silty mud between. Several snags caught in the water provided additional habitats for collecting. (1955 report.) |
