| Station 2 was located just below the Hamilton Paper Company approximately one-half mile above Flat Rock Dam. Because the left bank of this section of the river was utilized as a marina and was therefore an atypical habitat for aquatic organisms, the portion used for the station began at the downstream edge of the marina and extended about 100 yards. The station limits and landmarks are shown in Figure 2. The right bank of Station 2 was rocky and shallow with a variety of debris (logs,cans, glass, tires etc.) on which there was a heavy growth of filamentous green algae. The left bank of the station had a thick growth of willows overhanging deep water with a soft mud bottom occasionally interspersedwith muddy sand. The mud was exceedingly soft so that a person stepping on it would frequently sink two feet. When disturbed to this depth anaerobic gases were released in abundance. The deepest water at Station 2 was near the left bank. (1959, 1960, & 1966 reports.) |
