30 NAWQA 2001-to 2004-Start tax. - 1 b, diatoms-complement

Change system 30

This change system corrects misidentifications in NAWQA and is a complement to the 2004-Start taxonomy System (Change-system 29). Changed names are valid and might be used correctly in the future

11 TAXON NAMES CHANGED: (Naded Id's)

1: FROM: Achnanthes deflexa var. alpestris Lowe et Kociolek (2253)
TO: Achnanthidium rivulare Potapova et Ponader (1036)

REMARK: The diatom taxonomic coordinator and Karin studied NAWQA populations and determined that it is better to have everything under A. rivulare, although the names that are being changed are valid and might be used in the future for proper specimens. Although the name A. rivulare is well defined, in NAWQA it is a compisite taxon in which several things have been lumped. Because it is clear to us that A. rivulare is dominant among all these lumped taxa, it makes more sense to use the later name.

2: FROM: Achnanthes linearis (Smith) Grunow (2024)
TO: Achnanthidium rivulare Potapova et Ponader (1036)

3: FROM: Achnanthes linearis fo. curta Smith (2025)

4: FROM: Achnanthes linearis var. pusilla Grunow (2226)
TO: Achnanthidium rivulare Potapova et Ponader (1036)

5: FROM: Achnanthes pusilla (Grunow) DeToni (2026)
TO: Achnanthidium rivulare Potapova et Ponader (1036)

6: FROM: Achnanthes ziegleri Lange-Bertalot (2165)
TO: Achnanthidium exiguum (Grunow) Czarnecki (1024)

     REMARK: Analysis done by DW.

7: FROM: Achnanthidium pyrenaicum (Hustedt) Kobayashi (1023)
TO: Achnanthidium deflexum (Reimer) Kingston (1038)

REMARK: Correction per the diatom taxonomic coordinator.

8: FROM: Eunotia pectinalis var. minor (Kützing) Rabenhorst (33040)
TO: Eunotia implicata Nörpel, Alles et Lange-Bertalot (33168)

REMARK: Checked by diatom taxonomic coordinator

9: FROM: Gomphonema clevei Fricke (37060)
TO: Gomphonema kobayasii Kociolek et Kingston (37197)

REMARK: Gomphonema kobayasii, this should have been changed a long time ago

10: FROM: Gyrosigma nodiferum (Grunow) Reimer (38011)
       TO: Gyrosigma reimeri Sterrenburg (38027)

REMARK: this is not a direct change, some of the specimens of "G. nodiferum" were actually G. sciotoense or G. acuminatum. The name nodifrum should not be used anymore so it makes more sense to have a lum category under reimeri. More studies are needed to determine the proper identities of this lump category

11: FROM: Rossithidium pusillum (Grunow) Round et Bukhtiyarova (189003)
TO: Achnanthidium rivulare Potapova et Ponader (1036)
